It started with a Spot

It was when I was younger, on a visit to the library

I found the Hobbit book and lay on the lounger

The big intellectual words were beyond me

And the writing filled me with little glee

I must find something more my thing

To be enthralled with the wonders that reading does bring

There propped up on the shelf of the car, where the wheel spins far

Was Spot the dog chasing a ball

I picked up the book and revelled in the adventure of the humorous dog

Funny little thing, running and bouncing about

Next I found Obelix and Asterix from Gaul

Beating up the Romans

And accidentally feeding magic potion to a frog

Ribbit he went, and jumped a mile

All the way from the Amazon to the Nile

Terry Pratchett was a long way off

As the illustrations by Josh Kirby scared me so

Yet years later I had devoured them all

And so on and on I go, transported into a fantasy world

Of Dwarves, Witches, Orcs and Golems

Robert Rankin amuses me the most

With Lazlo Woodbine in his long trencoat

And he resides in only four set locations

Elvis appears too, travelling through space and time

With the aid of Barry the Sprout

Far fetched you may say, but these strange characters take me away

From the wild world around us

But I can’t read on a bus
