Head noise – Twisted Histories album review

I first experienced the might of Head noise when they synthed up the airwaves on Dan Rees’ show on gtfm (Mondays 10pm).

I was immediately struck by their immense tight musicianship and bonkers 80s sounds. I must go see them live and play them on my own show I thought (Saturdays 8pm Rhondda radio). Their new album Twisted Histories doesn’t disappoint.

With titles such as: Taft in the Bath, Napoleon blown apart and Time Mash you think what’s going on here. The whole album is full of crazy lyrics such as “we set sail at sunrise with corresponding tattoos, there’s a high chance you’ll contract scurvy” and “Ricky Gervais 80s slasher great times.”

There’s loads of original riffs with little memories thrown in for good measure. I particularly like the buzzing space wasp at the start of Doin’ Science before another fancy riff produces ecstatic listening pleasure

Mitch’s vocals throughout the album are on top form, the zany ideas full of energy and top notch timbre. It’s produced fantastically with all the instruments sounding great, showing off the boolakasha playing.

There’s not just synth but grungy guitars such as in Tojo Head Slap which is a tidy nod to X Ray Spex, Polystyrene, The Damned and The Sex Pistols. But it still has the classic Head Noise sound and feel. If they were on telly they would be Bill and Ben the flowerpot men with little weed on too much mushroom coffee.

There’s great bass lines and Japanese guitars making an appearance too.

So, all in all, if you’re fans of Ultravox, Kraftwerk, Devo, Duran Duran, OMD or depeche mode but crazier then this is for you.

Go see them in Clwb ifor bach Thursday May 30th for the launch show, tidy like.
